USDA officials report that the CEM outbreak is winding down, as the status of exposed horses is being determined. Kentucky, Georgia, Iowa and Indiana are considered CEM-free because all known exposed horses have been tested and treated. USDA officials say they are going to be testing horses not known to have been exposed to horses from this outbreak. That's an important step to demonstrate that they really do have the situation under control. Also read his article on Rabid Horse in Texas Transportation, particularly over long distances is likely the single most important predisposing factor for pleuropneumonia (aka "shipping fever"). The main reason this condition is so often associated with transportation (which is why the illness is often called shipping fever) is primarily due to the fact that most horses are transported with their heads tied with a short piece of rope to the stall or very close to the ceiling with their lead rope. This prevents the animals from lowering their heads, a motion that regularly allows drainage of the normal respiratory secretions which naturally accumulate in the lower trachea (windpipe) and further down the respiratory tract. The accumulation of this fluid, including the many bacteria from the throat and upper trachea that it normally contains, results in contamination of the lower airways and lungs which becomes a breeding ground for bacteria.
